The MSW Process

A while back, when I was first starting the process of applying for MSW programs, I promised a rundown of what it was like, how it felt and how it was progressing.

Well, the honest truth is that the process was such a scramble for me that I don't think I could have written anything very coherent about it anyways!

The process went something like this: The deadline approached, I panicked, completed the application with almost no time left and then sent them off just in time.

Due to this scramble, I was concerned about my chances at getting accepted. To add into this excitement, there was another variable. I haven't said anything about it before, but my wife is also a social worker, and was also applying. We needed to get into the same school, at the same time, to make the move feasible.

In total, we applied to four schools total: Two in British Columbia and two from the rest of Canada. Our first letters of whether we got accepted or not started streaming in a couple weeks ago. The first school that came in was our first option. One of us got in, the other didn't. Yikes. That's when panic set in. The reality that we might not even be GOING to a program struck.
And then the second school replied. Again, one got in, the other got rejected. Those next few days were interesting. We started making alternate plans. We'd go overseas! We'd pick up and move across the country! We'd forget social work and move down to the US to become staunch Republicans! (ok, maybe not that last one)

Anyways, a couple days ago, the results from the last school came in. Excitement ensued, as we were both accepted! What is interesting is that it is the school that we thought we had NO chance of acceptance for. It is one of the top Universities in Canada and a beautiful place to live.

So that's it! I'm going to grad school!

Oh, that's so exciting - and even more so that you and your wife will be studying together! Well done (and pass on anonymous but very heartfelt congrats to her too!).

Congratulations! Will you be remaining in BC or will be in the middle or eastern side of Canada? Maybe your country's capital?

Thanks, everyone. The only thing I'll say about where we're going is that the school is in a prairie province. I'll be more specific in the future. :)

I was going to ask if it will be cold.. erm.. but then I realised we are talking about Canada :p

The only way I could have avoided the cold and stay in Canada was to stay in BC! It'll be cold, but it's not the worst place in that respect.

Congratulations to both of you! I loved Social Work Graduate school. So much more interesting than my undergraduate studies! Wish you both well!

I LOVE the title of your blog! I can so relate.
