Highest Stress for the Lowest Pay

Consumerist had a recent post about this topic. I opened the article already knowing the answer to which one was #1. Anyone else have a guess? ;)

um, really? :p

I'm happy with my choice in doing speech instead...we don't get apid much, and do have to deal wih grief etc, but there's more compartmentalising that can be done... though I'm surprised Nursing wasn't on there...

I think nurses, especially RNs, are paid pretty well. Sure, high stress, but they're compensated. Well, at least compared to social workers.

I came across this article too. No surprise, huh! Oh well, gotta follow your passion and someday MAYBE we will be rewarding when it comes to $. But for now, the reward of helping another life for the better has to be enough and learning early on how to manage stress and have fun away from the job is key :)

Our profs often disagree with this. In fact, one prof told us she made three figures as a consultant doing bio-psycho-socials. Another, an adjunct professor (LCSW), in private practice told us he makes more than $80,000 per year. We recently had a speaker come to our class who works in Homeland Security (MSW) who earns an amazing salary -- and she isn't even licensed.

Bottom line: I have to have passion for SW. No amount of money will make me love a job. Of course I want a fair and reasonable wage, and I believe I will get one.

Thanks for a provocative post!

I plan on making good money, but I also have to keep the passion.

I think it's the addition of the stressful situations that we handle that puts us at the top.

Another piece in there is that they're also probably counting in people who simply call themselves social workers, which I've found could include care workers with a diploma.

Absolutely. Yet we get up every day, and go to war.

i have been practising as a social worker in a VWO in singapore since graduation with a BA for the last 2.5 years. my current gross monthly salary (before taxes) is USD 1650. I started with USD1380. Sigh..

i guess we're not asking for 4-5K salary.. but for the kind of work we do and our qualifications.. can we have a lil bit more plsss?
